Snowdonia Giant

Saturday February 26, and Sunday February 27, 2011, at 3 pm.

“I sing a short song about an old man who sits in the corner who has heard a tale from his father, and so he tells me,” said an old man from the corner. “From my dad he heard a rumour. He had heard it from his father.” And after him did I remember.
Beginning with a short tail about my grandfather who made a coat then a jacket, then a vest, then a hat, then a handkerchief, then a button, then a story, we then find ourselves in the hills of Snowdonia before the largest mountains in Wales were ever made. Here the giant Idwal lives with his daughter, Fflur, who works like a slave for him and is not allowed to speak to anyone. Picking blackberries on the hill, she meets a young man called Ffrancon and falls in love. They decide to run away to be married. Fflur cooks a huge breakfast for her father and after he’s fallen asleep, she goes to his bedroom and steals a comb, a razor and a mirror from his magic cupboard. She meets Ffrancon on his horse and they escape. The giant wakes up and finding the house empty, goes in search of his daughter. She sees her father galloping after them and throws the comb which turns into a forest, a razor which turns into a mountain and a mirror which turns into a lake. The giant, who can’t swim tries to jump over the lake, falls off his horse and drowns in the lake and Fflur and Ffrancon walk down the mountain to a village called Llanberis and get married.
Finish with the song again.

Cath Aran, the ‘official’ storyteller for Gwynedd, joins The festival of solo performance for children to recount tales from all over the world. She will whisk us away to a world full of giants and witches, goblins and fairies, and enthral her audience as they hear the voices and see the shadows of characters from lands long ago. Cath, who began her career in theatre, follows a great tradition of the ‘Cyfarwydd’ or storytellers who entertained in the courts of the Welsh Princes since the 6th century. Cath’s courts are now schools, colleges, community halls and festivals. Following her appearance at the festival AGOR DRYSAU, which takes place in Aberystwyth, Wales, she was invited to perform in Canada and Ireland.
